Offshore Oil Drilling

Hands Across the Sand says NO to offshore oil drilling

Hands Across the Sand is an international protest that happened around the world on Sat, June 26th. People participated at 800 spots across North and South America, Asia, Europe, Australia, and Africa. The protest was about protecting our marine life, our fisheries, and our coastal economies from the disastrous effects of offshore oil drilling, and to send a clear message the White House and the world that we will not tolerate another disaster like what's happening in the Gulf Coast.

Save Our Shores &  Surfrider were joined by over 250 protesters at Main Beach in Santa Cruz.

Check out the Hands Across the Sand website for additional locations and details: http://www.handsacrossthesand.com/.

The image is powerful, the message is simple.  NO to Offshore Oil Drilling, YES to Clean Energy.

Save Our Shores Makes a Splash at Offshore Oil drilling Hearings!

Save Our Shores' sea creature costumes drew attention on Thursday the 16th at the Offshore Oil Drilling Hearings hosted by Interior Secretary Salazar in San Francisco. The hearings were to gauge public opinion on the issue of offshore oil drilling in order to determine what actions the Obama Administration will be taking this fall with regard to allowing new offshore oil and gas drilling in our most sensitive coastal waters, and for approval of renewable energy industry proposals off of our coast.

Laura Kasa, Executive director of Save Our Shores along with Chris Gay, a dedicated Save Our Shores volunteer, were interviewed in their costumes!

Oil Drilling Off Our Shores? We Need Your Help to Continue to Protect Our Coast

We thought we were safe.

Save Our Shores was started in 1979 as a group of local citizens got together to harness community support to stop offshore oil drilling from coming to our coast. It was a tough battle, but Save Our Shores worked with the community and pushed for the designation of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and was successful when the largest marine sanctuary in the country was established in 1992, right here in our own backyard.

And so we thought we were safe until the presidential moratorium on new offshore drilling was lifted last year which now exposes the country to new offshore oil drilling proposals.

The threats to our wildlife and marine resources will be numerous if we allow our coasts to be opened to more drilling. If you care about preventing the sacrifice of your favorite coastline to dangerous offshore oil drilling impacts, WE NEED YOU TO TAKE ACTION NOW!
