Save Our Shores Initiatives

At Save Our Shores we believe that healthy oceans are only possible when everyone is aware of the challenges facing our oceans and involved in finding solutions.  Our programs deal with a wide array of issues, from marine debris to water quality and thriving ecosystems.

Through each program, SOS strives to educate and actively engage our community.  We also work to inform local, regional and state leaders and policy makers on the issues and collaborate with them to implement solutions.

Plastic Pollution Initiative:

Our oceans are filling up with garbage, especially plastics, and this threatens the future of thriving oceans, endangers marine animals and poses threats to human health.  To learn more about this issue, visit our Plastic Pollution Project Page.

Clean Boating Initiative:

Small oil spills happen everyday.  In fact more oil enters US waters each year from land based run off and boaters than the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill (which dumped 11 million gallons of oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound).   The SOS Clean Boating Initiative uses the DockWalker Program is an innovative, volunteer based program that educates boaters about the impacts of oil contamination and provides boaters with oil spill cleanup materials.  To learn more about how to get involved visit the DockWalker Team Page.

Ocean Awareness Initiative:

The world's oceans are in a state of crisis.  There are thousands of human impacts on our oceans that need our attention today. Save Our Shores is proud to launch this new Initiative to raise public awareness and citizen action with the goal of positive change today. Save Our Shores cannot target all of the impacts that threaten the ocean, but the Ocean Awareness Initiative develops targeted campaigns on specific issues. The Ocean Awareness Initiative is the place for community members to have the most input on what they think are the biggest threats to our Sanctuary and Ocean. If you have ideas for an Ocean Awareness campaign contact oa@saveourshores.org.Current Ocean Awareness campaigns can be found on the Current Projects Page.
